Over the past 5 years Lyras A/S, Denmark has developed technologies utilizing UV-C light to inactivate microorganisms in opaque liquids. We have named the patented technology Raslysation and it includes various improvements to previously known UV treatments.

For decades UV light has been used for see through liquids to kill pathogenic bacteria. With Raslysation, from Lyras it is now also possible to treat opaque, non-see through, liquids like milk, whey products, lactoferrin, broths, beer, and juices.

The effect of Raslysation is equal to a standard HTST treatment at 72 degree C for 15 seconds. The effect is high, and the energy use is low. Unlike thermal pasteurization, raslysation works by breaking the bindings in the DNA of the microorganisms, consequently bacteria, yeast and molds die, and the bacterial endospores cannot germinate.

As the process is non-thermal there are no heat induced changes to the product, e.g., no denaturation of proteins, no de-coloration, and no off taste. Most UV-C systems use the product to cool the UV-C lamps and there is therefore direct contact between glass and the product and risk of fouling. Raslysation is designed with a patented air-cooling system, thus avoiding contact between the lamps and the product. This design also ensures minimal product temperature increases during the treatment.

The equipment design is food grade and according to EHEDG. All product contact surfaces are made from Stainless Steel and chemically inert materials. The cleaning of the system can therefore be done as a standard CIP using caustic and acid. As the process is cold CIP is to be performed less frequently than on thermal systems.

With our patented design we can ensure germicidal effect from an energy usage as low as 0.5 kWh to 4 kWh per m3. This is a reduction of 60 to ³ 90% compared to standard pasteurization (HTST). Furthermore, the energy required is electrical, meaning that all the energy can be sourced sustainably. By converting from heat to Raslysation you can often reduce the carbon footprint by more than 90%. So not only does the system have a lower energy usage, it also has a lower carbon footprint entitling the end user to apply for local, national and EU subsidies to help with the change to a high quality sustainable Microbial reduction technology namely Raslysation.
